Starting in our twenties, our health and fitness is more subject to the effects of gravity, the environment, cellular changes, wear and tear and poor diet. These accumulate and, over time, become what we commonly call aging. The good news, however, is that an increasing amount of scientific evidence suggests we may be able to slow down this process. Of key interest is a group of dietary supplements called antioxidants, which help to protect the body against free-radical damage. According to the free radical theory of aging, these are “free” electrons that have broken loose from their attachment to the nuclei of oxygen atoms during the cellular energy-making process. They damage cells in an organism by stealing electrons in an effort to become stable, which (along with increases in free radicals caused by lifestyle and environmental factors) is said to result in many undesirable effects of aging. The “oxidative stress” caused to tissues by free radicals can be compared to oxidation of iron or steel that leads to rusting.
