Dizziness / Vertigo

vertigo

Imbalances in the upper area of the neck often put pressure on the nervous system causing dizziness or vertigo.

Vertigo is when a person feels as if they or the objects around them are moving when they are not.  Often it feels like a spinning or swaying movement.  This may be associated with nausea, vomiting, sweating, or difficulties walking. It is typically worsened when the head is moved.

When you’re dizzy, you may feel lightheaded or lose your balance.  If you feel that the room is spinning, you have vertigo.

A sudden drop in blood pressure or being dehydrated can make you dizzy.  Many people feel lightheaded if they get up too quickly from sitting or lying down.

Anxiety or panic attacks may also cause people to feel the sensation of vertigo. Stress may worsen symptoms, though it usually does not cause them.

Recurrent episodes in those with vertigo are common and frequently impair the quality of life.  Blurred vision, difficulty in speaking, a lowered level of consciousness, and hearing loss may also occur.

Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is the most common form of vertigo and is characterized by the brief sensation of motion lasting 15 seconds to a few minutes. This may be described as a sudden attack of vertigo. It may be initiated by sudden head movements or moving the head in a certain direction, such as rolling over in bed.

Dizziness usually gets better by itself or is easily treated. However, it can be a symptom of other disorders. Medicines may cause dizziness, or problems with your ear. Motion sickness can also make you dizzy.
