Headaches are one of the most common reasons for visiting the doctor. More than 250 million work days are lost each year due to headache at a cost of 25 billion dollars per year. There are many types and causes of headaches. Muscle tension headaches and migraine headaches are by far the most common types of headaches, but sinus infections and other problems such as high blood pressure can also lead to headaches.
Research shows that spinal manipulation – one of the primary treatments provided by doctors of chiropractic – may be an effective treatment option for tension headaches and headaches that originate in the neck.
80% of headaches originate from the neck. Usually an increased amount of stress and tension held in the shoulders causes contractions of all of the surrounding neck musculature. When these muscles contract, vertebrae can misalign causing pressure on spinal nerves causing pain. With a typical cervicogenic (neck origin) headache, a person usually feels pain starting at the base of the skull and can radiate into the temples, eyeballs, and forehead.
If you spend a large amount of time in one fixed position, such as in front of a computer, on a sewing machine, typing or reading, take a break and stretch every 30 minutes to one hour. The stretches should take your head and neck through a comfortable range of motion.
There may be several other causes of headaches, so a proper examination is needed to determine the actual cause. Chiropractic adjustments can help relieve this pressure on the nervous system and often headaches and migraines will decrease in frequency and intensity.
