Sciatica is a pain symptom of the low back that is a result of an underlying condition. The pain associated with sciatica is characterized by radiating, shooting, and/or tingling pain down the back or side of one or both legs. This pain can usually be traced along the same path as the distribution of the sciatic nerve, a large nerve that feeds the lower half of your body. Sciatica often results from nerve compression related to disc injury or herniation, degenerative joint disease and sports or occupational injuries.
Chiropractic works to correct the subluxation or fixation that is causing compression on the sciatic nerve. The adjustment restores proper motion into the joint and opens the area that the nerve feeds through. Once the adjustment has been performed, the nerve conduction can flow freely, eliminating pain and restoring proper function

Once the cause has been identified, corrective spinal manipulations as well as passive modalities are used to facilitate the healing process. Stretching and regular exercise should also be implemented to strengthen the lower back and core musculature.
