Veterans dealing with chronic pain, musculoskeletal issues, or service-related conditions have powerful non-opioid options through the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Both chiropractic care and acupuncture are covered under the VA’s standard Medical Benefits Package for eligible enrolled Veterans.
When on-site VA services are limited by wait times, distance, or availability, these therapies are provided through the VA Community Care Network (CCN)—at no out-of-pocket cost for approved care. Chiropractic services have been part of VA benefits since 2004, focusing on neuromusculoskeletal conditions like back, neck, and joint pain. Access occurs via referral from your VA primary care or specialty provider.
The CCN ensures timely treatment from credentialed community providers. Acupuncture, including Battlefield Acupuncture (BFA)—a quick ear-based protocol for pain relief—is integrated into the VA’s Whole Health System under VHA Directive 1137 (recertified 2022). It’s used for pain management, PTSD symptoms, and more, emphasizing natural healing and reduced opioid reliance per the 2016 Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act.
A major 2026 update has transformed access: VA now offers year-long authorizations (up to 12 months) for 30 standardized services, including many pain management and orthopedic-related treatments. This applies to eligible chiropractic and acupuncture episodes, minimizing reauthorizations (previously every 90-180 days) and allowing consistent, uninterrupted care.
Standard Episodes of Care (SEOCs) guide treatment: Initial chiropractic trials often cover up to 12 visits over 90 days, with chronic management extensions possible—now frequently up to one year. Acupuncture follows similar structures, with BFA providing fast, 15-20 minute sessions. Providers track objective progress (pain scales, range of motion, functional improvements) to support approvals.
